Win-Win Business and Community Partnerships:
Innovative Funding and Sustainability
Innovative Funding and Sustainability

Grant monies are and always should be seen as temporary sources of funding, understanding that those funds may go away at any time. Likewise, nonprofits should not get in the game that is sometimes played by chasing after the grant. Some organizations have taken a dangerous path that leads to self-destruction. These organizations lose all focus on their current mission and allow themselves to chase grants and mold themselves into whatever the specific grant calls for in order to get funding.
Likewise, private foundations are also becoming very restrictive and often times ask specific questions in their grant application as to what percentage of the board is giving and/or what amount of dollars both the board and community give to the current program – trying to weed out organizations that are not serious but just looking for an easy way to get funding.
Overall, fundraising is a major component of what a board’s role is all about. How well an organization is funded determines how extensive their programs can be for their community.
The funding of an organisation needs comes down to what it does, who its users are, and what stage it's reached in its developmental lifecycle. A stainable funding approach is about using the appropriate income stream(s) to drive development at the appropriate time.
Sustainable funding is based on the idea that organisations are most at risk if too much of their funding is concentrated in one source – this could be from one income stream or from one funder.
This not only spreads risk, but ensures organisations are best placed to take advantage of emerging trends and opportunities and are able to safeguard their financial future without sacrificing independence or mission.
Becoming more sustainable often means making changes in a number of aspects of your organisation.
Key to achieving sustainability is
Sustainability is the most precious foundation of community organizations and charities and our ability to harness the power of our businesses and community partnership is key to our future prosperity as a country. This Win-Win Business and Community Partnerships: Innovative Funding and Sustainability is an opportunity for Canadian business and community organizations to come together and hear about how harnessing the power of partnerships will drive innovation and transform our businesses and community into a sustainable-based programs and charitable causes.
Win-Win Business and Community Partnerships: Innovative Funding and Sustainability
Building lasting partnershipsUnderstanding the environment in which you operate is key to the longevity of local projects. Concerned about the impact the recession would have on valuable local projects, Quartet Community Foundation worked with its Local Strategic Partnership to develop the North Somerset Recession Fund, which supported at-risk voluntary and community sector organisations through the provision of grants. Working in partnership to consider the financial climate and plan ahead may well have saved some valuable services from ruin. It is this type of consideration which Neath & Port Talbot’s panel and locally funded project took into account when it increased costs for a project providing maintenance services just as the recession was beginning to bite. From a position of higher-than-anticipated requests for the service, demand fell sharply as the project’s elderly and disabled clients decided to “make do and mend”.
