Celebrating Immigrants Who Make a Difference:

Canadian Harmony and Inclusion Network (CHAIN)and Peel Hate Prevention Community Coalition (PHPCC) have formed Celebrating Immigrants Who Make a Difference. A program that embraces, networks, and encourages ordinary immigrants who are making a difference and make their success and contribution to society recognized and celebrated.
Immigration means uprooting oneself, disrupting established relationships, detaching from a social structure of society and a consequent process of “growing roots” in a new Canadian society, establishing new relationships and becoming part of the Canadian mosaic.
In times such as challenges for a newcomer, we can not afford to concentrate on negative reality of racism, hate, systemic barriers, and discrimination. Newcomers need support, hope, dream, inclusion, inspiration, mentors, and role models. “Newcomers need good news. Celebrating Immigrants who Make a Difference” is all about that voice of hope and that good news.
The celebrated immigrants are everyday people who believe that helping others, that acknowledging another person’s value, that recognizing someone else’s potential, their challenges, or barrier was as essential as taking a breath. Celebrated immigrants become the change they want to see as Mahatma Gandhi once said, ”Be the change you want to see in the world.”
The celebrated immigrants to Canada reaffirm a welcoming community that brings together people of all backgrounds to build a society where one’s heritage is a source of pride and inspiration.
Newcomers are empowered by ordinary immigrant men and women to belong equally and fully in a Canada for all. A Canada where all sectors of society- governments, organizations, individuals, ethno-racial, ethno-cultural, and inter-faith communities- live together in harmony and with equal opportunities.

Embrace Canada, Together We Belong

Learn English as a Second Language: Let’s face it, if you don’t learn English all your skills will be hidden away like a gem in a cave. Newcomers to Canada are encouraged to make a real effort to learn English as a Second Language (ESL).
Stay Positive: No matter what you may meet with resistance and barriers in job-finding or other settlement needs, never allow negativity to seeps into your being. Think about why you were exited about immigrating to Canada, and focus on all the great things you want to accomplish here.
Believe, Together We Are Canada: Immigrating to a new country can be challenging. Many newcomers tend to move into an ethnic community that matches their own backgrounds. While you are encouraged to maintain your own cultural heritage, your true identity growth in Canada will come from involvement in diverse community life and celebrating Canada’s multicultural ideals. When you have friends of all nationalities in Canadian mosaic, you will reach your highest of all you plan to be in Canada, to be a Canadian, and to fully belong in a Canada, believing that together we are Canada.
Leave Hatred Behind: Every newcomer coming to Canada, or already here, should adhere strictly to leaving hatred behind. Don’t bring to Canada the old malice and rancour of your old country, ancestors, religion, or culture. You are encouraged to bring as much of your identity as you like, but don’t let your view of troubles overseas induce you to act in a way that is detrimental to Canada or any other Canadians. Treat all Canadians as Canadians first, be in harmony with all, including your old enemies or others who may have hurt you or treated you as a lower cast or a second class citizen. Now you are safe, secure, protected by laws, and equal in all and with all under the constitution and practice in Canada.
Embrace Canada: Do you remember your dreams about immigrating to Canada? Well, they have come true. Now enjoy adapting to all what Canada is all about. Believe that you belong equally and fully to your new home. Embrace Canada, your dream which has now become your reality.
